00:01:33: welcome to the podcast!

00:01:35: Thanks Emma.

00:01:36: so good to be here.

00:01:38: So i would love you too as we all are many things...so i'd like for you introduce yourself and at the end it's very interesting because i remember sitting with you in an event and your introducing yourselves saying these things.

00:01:52: what about books Annie?

00:01:54: Anyway, so you tell us in your words who are you Annie.

00:01:58: Okay

00:01:58: um

00:01:59: So my name is Annie.

00:02:00: I am an author a design journalist and a copywriter.

00:02:04: Um, so i specialise In uh book writing so ghostwriting books for For clients as well As some journalism And editorial work.

00:02:14: I have had My business now which Is atrium media about twelve, thirteen years and I tend to specialise in the architecture interior design industries and sectors.

00:02:28: And dabble a bit in property and sustainability when i work on various books that are right now upto twelve.

00:02:37: so working with my thirteenth or fourteenths they can be anywhere from lifestyle through business uh four or five of Australia's leading publishers to work with authors, to get their books on bookshelves.

00:02:54: It's amazing and I loved.

00:02:56: you shared a video recently of you in a fabulous outfit!

00:02:59: And you were going into the shop i believe maybe at The NGV?

00:03:02: Maybe somewhere else?

00:03:03: From the NGv

00:03:03: Design Store.

00:03:04: yeah... Yeah..and

00:03:06: I love that NG v haven't been for years but next time we go down to Melbourne ,I can't wait to go.

00:03:09: and is there any greater feeling than seeing that book?

00:03:15: No, I think it never gets old.

00:03:18: Um i think especially when you know how much work You've put into that book and The fact that people can pick up And they can look through It They Can Read the Words That You've Spent so Long on Crafting and then buy it with their own money?

00:03:41: But equally, I also like seeing it in libraries as well.

00:03:45: So i didn't post this but the next day I went to The State Library of Victoria and...the last time I'd been there- the book was sitting In the folio section on the ground floor On their bookshelves And so you could pick It up quite easily.

00:04:02: Now its moved!

00:04:04: it's progressed on to the bookshelf section, so which is upstairs in The Redmond Barry Reading Room.

00:04:10: So you head up stairs and that's like its lifestyle!

00:04:13: That looks like an end of life place where it will live forever hopefully.

00:04:22: Let us go there because someone told me they didn't take a photo.

00:04:25: I don't know why i did not take one but We're in this like group business group, which is I think Emma Lepple's here and pretty sure she wrote a book.

00:04:33: And i'm pretty sure I saw it at the State Library of Victoria and was like what?

00:04:37: Really?!

00:04:38: Yeah

00:04:39: apparently!

00:04:41: Someone messaged me from Adelaide there and someone in New Zealand has requested it.

00:04:46: It just mind boggling that... The nonchalance.

00:04:51: so yeah you took your photo huge deal.

00:04:56: And a friend sent me video of her going and finding it, she'd requested to her library.

00:05:01: so I think people don't realise this too like you can just go to libraries but actually as a friend or an author help them by asking the book shop and ask your library to stock at.

00:05:13: they can request then order in.

00:05:17: that's something special.

00:05:19: yeah i think we need date get all dressed up And we'll go to the NGV and be like, oh so what is this your book?

00:05:28: I'm gonna get on a stator.

00:05:32: We're just ventured down Slumson Street at The State Library and do little search and see where you are books sitting because your books smaller than mine.

00:05:41: So it might... It will be in different section but i am not sure where But there's going somewhere and its exciting Going On A Little Journey and an adventure To Find It And

00:05:50: finding it.

00:05:52: You know..we had a really special a meeting last year that was, so you and I had been in groups and known of each other.

00:06:01: And then you agreed to...and booked into come on my retreat.

00:06:06: but i think we'd sort of met like from that time.

00:06:11: it's like they hadn't seen you again!

00:06:13: And I was at accidentally the affordable art show and walking around in my casual pink jacket.

00:06:21: And it was a really special day Annie, I will remember forever.

00:06:24: because um... My friend Sandra Gale gifted me the ticket so went to visit her.

00:06:30: then caught up with friends there you were like, Emma Lovell!

00:06:35: It's just this being seen as known.

00:06:39: obviously i did know you but to see you and be recognized And then to have this like, oh my gosh we're gonna see each other in India.

00:06:47: How great.

00:06:49: And no joke a few minutes later somebody else came over and she was like am I level?

00:06:53: It's just like Oh!

00:06:55: I recognized you from your pink jacket.

00:06:57: She is like i've just read your book and loved it.

00:06:58: Then started raving about the lady next to me To her telling if needed and basically doing my pitch.

00:07:08: So she walked off and you'd gone off and cried coming together and people appreciate what you've put into the world, and then appreciate you.

00:07:20: And look at these beautiful people that I'm attracting

00:07:22: in.".

00:07:23: So thank you for being part of a very specific thing.

00:07:26: You know Emma it wouldn't have happened unless you weren't wearing that pink jacket?

00:07:32: I know!

00:07:32: She

00:07:32: wasn't even standing up she was sitting down all the time.

00:07:35: yeah i just was drawn to anything sparkly.

00:07:38: oh that's great.

00:07:41: Of course it's Emma, not going to say hi.

00:07:44: There was a time once when I wasn't in India so I think Mexico is standing on the side of the road as you do probably not safe.

00:07:51: but anyway and this guy from my class i studied at university he said oh there's a blonde girl sitting next to me maybe its emma?

00:07:57: So he did a u-turn came back it's big road pulls over A friend from class and he's like, do you guys need a ride?

00:08:07: And I think oh the car has been his classic Mexico story.

00:08:10: Me and these two Swedish girls hanging out with this Mexican guy cars being pulled over by police.

00:08:15: so we were standing on side of road.

00:08:16: So we're like

00:08:18: buy.

00:08:18: other guy got in my friends' car left But yeah it is probably me on the side of the road.

00:08:24: It was me at the pink carpet.

00:08:25: Yeah I will pop up here.

00:08:27: weird places You welcome Placing.

00:08:30: Yeah,

00:08:31: and so we did well.

00:08:32: We were meant to go to Nepal but we didn't end up going India on a retreat.

00:08:36: And how is?

00:08:37: that was the little bit of it thing for you because?

00:08:39: You're a little bit like I'm sure if you can

00:08:42: make.

00:08:42: yeah i think i. Initially i was like no i'm not doing it Because i had made the decision really quickly to go into paul Like he.

00:08:50: just you came along at exactly the right moment For me.

00:08:55: I didn't really hesitate, i was ready for something to do.

00:08:59: that was out of my comfort zone and then when there was political instability in civil unrest it wasn't safe to go.

00:09:09: so i completely understood the things needed to change.

00:09:12: but then i said India no straight away.

00:09:16: No!

00:09:17: And And I thought, hold on.

00:09:22: It's booked!

00:09:23: Like everything is organised you just have to go.

00:09:28: and it involved a mindset shift for me... ...and in the end what if we got to lose?

00:09:35: Just going with the moment sees the day.. ..and i'm so glad- You

00:09:40: can literally write something like that YOLO!

00:09:43: I think you guys see that.

00:09:44: You're like, yolo?

00:09:46: I'm coming to India and it's just like...

00:09:48: I

00:09:48: love this lady every time Every interaction.

00:09:51: i love her more and more Like

00:09:54: YOLLO

00:09:55: Business colleagues YOLOO let's

00:09:57: do

00:09:58: Also.

00:09:59: I love the

00:10:01: feeling of that but obviously we had to change flights.

00:10:03: there was a little bit of cost.

00:10:04: Yeah I understood And honestly when I called you all I was more upset than all of you.

00:10:10: Devastated because I knew what...I had planned, but then i also knew that India would hold us.

00:10:16: and I knew yeah that I could create an incredible experience for you all.

00:10:21: And then what it was great for me was just that these beautiful people just trusted me in six out of the eight people- and I fully understood if people didn't want to do them?

00:10:29: Six out of The Eight People said yes absolutely let's go um..and I was like yes look at these people again.

00:10:35: they're attracting want this and get this.

00:10:40: And then, I mean like if you hadn't come to Indie wouldn't have got your tassels again side of the road.

00:10:46: tell us about their tassel.

00:10:47: They're hanging in my lounge room.

00:10:49: they bring me so much joy.

00:10:51: So what are

00:10:52: they?

00:10:59: Their tassles made of foil like long skinny pieces of foil in different colors.

00:11:04: And we saw them as we were driving down Indian freeways and roads, and truck drivers would place them on the side if they're trucks one-on-either side!

00:11:14: They came in various sizes all sorts of different colours really bright colourful... I just fell in love with him straight away.

00:11:23: Another story on this side is that when we found out There was a stall and I could see all of these like sparkly colors.

00:11:32: And oh my god, they're selling the tassels because i haven't seen them anywhere else!

00:11:37: So we stopped...and then bought two.

00:11:40: and I think you bought some too Emma?

00:11:42: No, i just i did the gallivanting but we

00:11:47: bought someone else's port song.

00:11:48: I think maybe!

00:11:49: But was that?

00:11:50: ask-and-you shall receive.

00:11:52: so you had asked?

00:11:53: Yeah!

00:11:53: And my kid is like what are they?

00:11:55: why aren't

00:11:56: there?".

00:11:56: They just decorate their trucks...but it seems to be a model for something like this.

00:12:04: It was a spiritual meaning.

00:12:05: So they ward off the negative energy that people give you when they're jealous of your vehicle, so why do I... They put them on their cars?

00:12:15: Someone like if i have it in my house does that ward off negative energy too?

00:12:21: And finally at The Better right?

00:12:22: The more reflective.

00:12:25: but I love how you ask and you were like If we see them or find some where then half an hour or something.

00:12:31: We saw them and I was like, Sanjay stop the car!

00:12:36: And he got

00:12:38: off...I

00:12:39: think

00:12:39: i was feeling a bit carsick at that time so i'm sitting in front.

00:12:44: it's just such great moment.

00:12:46: It is so much fun Now when we look back on it probably would have paid ten times as much for those things.

00:12:54: Do you remember all saying he was like, Sanjay is very protective of us and let me do it.

00:12:58: And we were trying to talk with the guy who's like stop!

00:13:01: He just comes in and says listen she will pay this much for these tassels?

00:13:09: What else would you want?

00:13:10: We're like that's enough.

00:13:12: Everyone has a tassel.

00:13:18: So when people are Are you going on a retreat and they're picturing all this stuff?

00:13:24: We like, we don't know.

00:13:25: We were driving, we're stepping on the side of the road

00:13:28: where

00:13:29: um You know, we dancing in a bar, you know with I don't it was It was.

00:13:34: i just loved how all embracing yeah All of you were and something special that happened on that retreat too.

00:13:39: I really love hearing you saying And I know you've been getting there but I feel Like you had that thing because I come from your background too, i come from that copywriting also not your journalism but i come form a writing background and you know it's very solo work.

00:13:54: so you're a soul trader.

00:13:56: You're a freelancer like you sort of fall into...you feel like little on-your-own business?

00:14:01: And to hear you saying my business..I feel like you're talking more about my business now!

00:14:08: That was something where we had conversations around.

00:14:10: then there were a lot.

00:14:12: You know, we'll talk more about the project you're leading to as well.

00:14:16: It's like... We can't think just a solo wedding or it is business!

00:14:22: And so even here who introduced that was really cool.

00:14:28: Yes I got so much out of that trip.

00:14:31: Also remember when talking He had moments throughout the treat where it wasn't just sightseeing or relaxing, but our workshops and we looked at different ways that we could think about out business.

00:14:46: And for me is looking things in atrium media as an ecosystem and then how future projects would align with that.

00:14:55: and were they sat?

00:14:58: I love because really helped me reframe the way I think about things in a way that i hadn't done before, and I don't think...I would get that necessarily um..in any other way.

00:15:09: You need to Get yourself out of your environment And put yourself somewhere completely foreign To help you see things in new light.

00:15:18: And we did the workshops of course, and I think where i tell people that beauty is like these retreats.

00:15:23: Like don't fill your day up with sitting in a room doing a workshop.

00:15:26: That's good to have structured time.

00:15:30: The ruminating and thinking after and what im picturing are those real penny drop moments for you.

00:15:39: was You asking me question us discussing it then someone else over here who has brilliant business mind and then joining in, asking challenging questions.

00:15:50: But it was... I always say on-the-bus conversation is the transit or choosing to wander down at a pool when someone else happens there.

00:15:59: you just end up talking When that aha comes for me later going back doing your work wherever you are remembering very situational time because of this wild environment.

00:16:17: I was on the bus, i said this like...I can remember verbatim conversations that I wouldn't remember if I were in my office or us sitting at a coaching session.

00:16:25: I would not remember it but I remembered verbatum-that discussion and everything!

00:16:31: Out of the window you could see Paul leaning into me thinking about all these things.

00:16:37: That is sometimes the beauty to do your work elsewhere.

00:16:43: And also having an intimate group was really great for that because it enabled everyone to have a really strong and meaningful conversation.

00:16:55: It wasn't fleeting, um... And then you could come back to that on another day.

00:17:00: Um..and then you found yourself Really getting to know people On a much more personal level than you would any other way.

00:17:10: Yeah For me as someone who really values good conversation and meeting people who, you know really love what they do.

00:17:18: And are doing interesting things it was fantastic so valuable and inspiring.

00:17:24: I love it!

00:17:24: So one of the thing we talked about in that i feel like has been gestating for a while but really sort of is like no gonna to this now...and remembering some loves..you know?I loved learning Yes.

00:17:38: You know, like okay and then you've got this amazing project.

00:17:47: so please tell us about House Music?

00:17:51: So house music is a project that I have been working on now for year-and-a-half And it's sound design installation an event we'll be taking place next July in Melbourne.

00:18:06: It's essentially...it's a takeover of multi-disciplinary artists who will take over rooms at the heritage home and they'll create a site specific soundscape within each room which will be complemented by um certain interior objects, different things beautiful things to look at.

00:18:31: Visitors will be invited to tour their house and immersive soundscapes to listen too, look at things.

00:18:43: And they will walk through the house have this really immersive experience.

00:18:48: so The idea is that it celebrates sound as a sense.

00:18:53: It also celebrates history and heritage looking after these incredible matches and properties we had in Melbourne but obviously all over world as well as celebrating local talent, so I'm looking to work with really clever local sound artists and other designers to bring it to life.

00:19:16: And then i want to take it around the world!

00:19:18: I wanna write a book about it... ...I wanted to be this incredible movement that's not really happened before.. ..and I've got my artists like super talented people.... ...I have curators I have like a videographer, um a stylist.

00:19:37: Like all the people that i need but now it's just a case of the funding and the sponsors to help bring it to life.

00:19:45: so love it super exciting!

00:19:48: And i love that you have a bigger vision for it?

00:19:50: Like i love from what we started sharing... To see that.. You know when you put a lot of work into I love seeing people who would like, you're doing the first thing to do.

00:20:03: The third, the tenth building that and that comes back to that.

00:20:08: then thinking of the business it's like foundation in structure can hold future work obviously very important or stuff but make decisions differently when your thinking.

00:20:23: well if this is going happen three times at different places how will i set up?

00:20:30: Yeah, I don't know.

00:20:32: Just...I think the first one's always going to be the most challenging of course but also you've got the most power and energy and excitement because it is new.

00:20:43: so there are pros and cons for that first one.

00:20:46: But i just think having that future vision hearing you talk about that And I can see it.

00:20:49: So we're saying July twenty-twenty seven So it'll

00:20:58: be the weekend of the twenty third and fourth or fourth, twenty-fourth and twenty fifth.

00:21:05: Of July.

00:21:06: I'm hoping to align with Open House Melbourne which will.

00:21:11: they haven't confirmed that dates but its their twentieth anniversary next year Which is so awesome.

00:21:17: That's been going for twenty years And so They're actually thinking if two weekends That was the latest I heard.

00:21:25: But if they don't do that, then we'll revert back to second last weekend in July.

00:21:31: so...that would be amazing to attract a really incredible audience.

00:21:38: come through my project and it will be held at a beautiful heritage mansion called La Bassa Mansion which is in Caulfield North where a lot of Melbourneians know about la bassa.

00:21:51: They're currently filming a Hollywood movie there at the moment, as well as at Rip and Lee.

00:21:56: So it's off limits but I do have The House for next July so everything is lined up!

00:22:04: I just need to make that happen.

00:22:05: Well not turn this into coaching session But if you put a pre-sale on i'd buy ticket.

00:22:13: Yes, especially

00:22:15: for launch night.

00:22:16: I need to be there, just saying.

00:22:18: You definitely

00:22:19: need it with our fabulous outfit and we'll fly down in a little bit of.

00:22:23: but um oh i Just love it And look to be honest selfishly.

00:22:27: It really works for me because I've decided on going to Egypt to see the eclipse and that's on the second of August.

00:22:32: So it works out well Really?

00:22:34: Yes

00:22:35: Oh my gosh

00:22:37: Yeah

00:22:38: The Eclipse.

00:22:40: Will it be like over-the-pyramids or some sort?

00:22:43: yeah

00:22:44: There is gonna be six minutes of darkness.

00:22:47: it's gonna be like biblical right.

00:22:48: and then there was yeah.

00:22:50: so yeah Luxor has really dined out on already because they um have accommodation for three nights for thirty-three thousand dollars with a minimum at seven thousand dollars per one bedroom apartment.

00:23:01: So we won't be going there, will be going to another place where it's five and a half minutes of darkness which is still quite a lot of dark And it's like fourteen hundred for three nights.

00:23:13: So anyway, this is how I roll so that works really well to me in the calendar.

00:23:18: Thank you very much.

00:23:20: last week and once Annie has things locked into a little more we will absolutely promote and share these because i just think Celebrating The Arts In This Way It Is Such A Really Awesome Thing And I Just Love Seeing To Annie Like You Said All These Twelve Years Of Business All These Experiences that all work together, but to bring these skillsets in such a way and then also have the thing of like this will be your next book.

00:23:51: That's

00:23:52: an

00:23:52: experience.

00:23:53: I write about it.

00:23:54: so there are books you wouldn't even know would exist in the past where well i'm going.

00:24:10: book is like a coffee table book.

00:24:12: So do you think it's kind of like that?

00:24:13: Like, oh yeah!

00:24:15: Yeah It will be visually rich.

00:24:18: um each chapter this is how I see in my head.

00:24:22: Each chapter will be A room within the house.

00:24:27: so there will be multiple houses In the book and then each room Will feature a QR code That will take You into The soundscape that was created for that space.

00:24:39: So you won't just read it as a like, two-D object.

00:24:46: It will be a sensory experience.

00:24:47: so even if he didn't see the house in person You'll still be able to hear The soundscape that was created and have some sort of immersive Experience In the book in a really different way been experimenting with QR codes in their books, but it's been more around how to elevate the reading experience.

00:25:15: So through relaxing music and playing around with frequencies then that sort of thing... And I really like that!

00:25:22: But this is more about the intersection between interiors and sound and creating that completely different way than no one has done before.

00:25:31: so we'll see.

00:25:33: who knows love

00:25:34: it well.

00:25:35: and i've heard something interesting the other day.

00:25:37: um and hadn't thought about this way, like how taylor swift videoed her concert?

00:25:43: part of me got to go.

00:25:45: so part of my understanding is yes not everybody's gonna afford a ticket.

00:25:48: Not everyone will get to see that show but I tried to watch it on TV and... It's probably good in a way because three hours is long time, so i can just watch a bit go away.

00:26:01: But this woman said that she went into the cinema to watch shit.

00:26:04: So cause she released it in the cinema She still got that collective experience of sharing it Like I guess the sound of things being in something.

00:26:15: but also for her shes like..I don't like going to concerts I dont like travelling there , I dont feel people The late night you know, not being able to go the toilet.

00:26:25: It's like oh I love that!

00:26:27: You know?

00:26:27: And it was like...I hadn't thought about that in terms of an accessibility thing.

00:26:32: and so no everybody is going get to Melbourne or all the other fabulous places necessarily.

00:26:38: but also people who did get-to-go might want to relive it and experience it a different way.

00:26:44: there are those accessibility touches for vision impaired people.

00:26:48: they can still feel the book.

00:26:51: So many, yeah I love that.

00:26:53: That's...I didn't think about it in that way and how beautiful it is.

00:26:59: you get to experience the thing because obviously of course your house isn't a thing but not everyone will get that.

00:27:06: so It gets to live on And you've done all this work for just be like a weekend and then say bye Like its sad.

00:27:16: You know who?

00:27:17: A videographer!

00:27:18: How amazing You know, like

00:27:23: going through the visual lens.

00:27:26: Yeah and I think that i really liked about house music is it just came at a time when?

00:27:34: I finished assemblages which was the name of the book Assemblage The Art Of The Room And I Really Was Struggling To Think About What I Would Do Next Because I've Done This Book And It's Taken Three Years And I'm So Proud Of It.

00:27:50: And then it was a conversation that I had for the book with an architect, but that interview didn't make into the book.

00:28:00: That particular section and it was about The Resonance of Rooms and It's Stuck With Me!

00:28:19: But it wasn't really until India that I really thought, I can do this.

00:28:25: So even though the idea came to me in February last year and then we went into India in November... ...I was just toying with her!

00:28:38: I thought maybe it was possible but i hadn't gone for it in my head.

00:28:44: And I think embarking on adventure proving you can do these things.

00:28:52: It's like, yeah I think...I could do this and it'd be great!

00:28:55: I'll just- I'll do it.

00:28:56: that's fine.

00:28:58: Well..and i just think also a little bit of permission....i know we were all there And sometimes if you don't want to but need some kind of permission in other people going why not?

00:29:08: Why

00:29:08: Not??

00:29:10: What is the worst thing that can happen?

00:29:12: We did an exercise where we explored it and was like why not or why not?

00:29:16: and then what?

00:29:16: Then what?

00:29:18: If it fails Nobody funds it.

00:29:21: What if this happens?

00:29:22: Well, then you don't run in.

00:29:23: what is this happens?

00:29:23: well Then we change It.

00:29:25: what if my retreat moves?

00:29:26: another country will then I move that?

00:29:27: You know what if this crisis happens than i move it, you know like there are You you know its good to go down the scenario path.

00:29:35: but also Like what if it works?

00:29:39: What if it's amazing?

00:29:41: yeah?

00:29:41: Yeah The

00:29:41: best thing I ever did.

00:29:43: I've always said If it doesn't work i'm gonna be okay with That because adventure that I've had to this point has been amazing.

00:29:52: Like, i've met so many incredible people and it's opened up my world into a new world of sound... That was passionate about an interest in but I hadn't really explored it in my work To the same degree that I worked with interior designers and architects.

00:30:10: So as a result of that And just being very organic I've met along the way and they have come into my world, introduced to house music.

00:30:26: People got on board are excited about it!

00:30:32: It's been a really interesting journey that is very different from what i would normally do which has very driven and motivated.

00:30:43: And have a goal in mind, this is what I'm going to do.

00:30:46: And when...I'm not gonna stop until like do it whereas This has just been much more naturally curious about letting It unfold and see where it takes me?

00:30:57: So that journey has been worth it.

00:30:58: Like if nothing happens i am just happy for That but

00:31:02: also it will though you've committed, and I think there's something so powerful about speaking your dreams out loud.

00:31:10: And remember how tentatively you brought it up?

00:31:12: It was like kind of this thing... I'm just kinda like

00:31:15: what?!

00:31:16: That's amazing!

00:31:17: There is a book by Dolly Parton here where she talks about speaking her things into existence.

00:31:26: The Hannah Montana special happened because she kept talking about it to the point when people believed that They're like, do this and someone just produces it.

00:31:38: But it does kind of... It gets weight in momentum.

00:31:41: And when we do that what if?

00:31:43: Like you can write down all the challenges.

00:31:45: The answer to everything is okay but I'll make it happen!

00:31:49: But i'm not going let it fail.

00:31:50: But im gonna ask for help.

00:31:52: Im gonna get support.

00:31:53: Just cant see how these won't work.

00:31:57: Only might not be happening the way first thought would.

00:31:59: Yeah its happening

00:32:02: That's okay.
