Welcome to the Emma Lovell show, a place where we talk about living a life you love now, I'm your host, Emma Lovell, and my number one value is freedom. I've spent the last 14 years running a business and traveling the world. And now I take my husband and toddler along for the adventure to it's possible and I know you can create a life doing what you truly love as well. This podcast will inspire, motivate and encourage you to go after your dreams to create a life you love until you get now don't wait for a time and or someday in the future. I'll be sharing episodes weekly about how I harmonize business travel and self care. I'll also bring on incredible guests to share their journeys, wins the challenges and how they're creating a life they love. Let's jump in and get dreaming. This is a space for you to manifest a life you love.

01: 03

01: I would like to acknowledge and recognize Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the first peoples of this place now known as Australia. I am grateful for the continuing care of the land waterways and skies where I work live, listen, learn and play. From here on you can bear country and from wherever you are listening, I pay my respects to the elders past and present.

01: 26

01: Hello, and welcome to today's podcast. This one is actually about podcasting. It's podcast inception. And this is all about how I got into podcasting. How I run my podcast, because I get asked about it a lot. And actually, I have been podcasting for four years, almost four years, it was May 2020, you know, the pandemic when I started my podcasting journey, which is wild and cumulatively I have over, I have actually 200 episodes, cumulatively because I have three podcasts. My first podcast was lovely travels, which I have 87 episodes of that is still live, you can listen to it anytime, at seven incredible episodes with my co host Darius, who's from Germany, and living in Germany. And we ran that together

02: 29

02: with a multitude of amazing guests from around the world. My second podcast, which was my business podcast, called Living love your brand, focusing on personal branding and sharing the stories of people have their personal brands as well as experts who could support you to build your personal brand. And then I decided to combine the both but also to have a podcast which gave me the freedom to talk about whatever I so pleased, because my life and my business journey are very eclectic. And I wanted something to reflect that. So I now have this podcast which you are listening to the Emma Lovell show, which is all about living a life you love. And my focus areas are business, travel and self care.

03: 19

03: So it's been quite the evolution. And we are up to episode 42 today, which is incredible. I started this one in September last year. So I am racing towards the 100, I got to 8781 I think, and I really, really, really want to hit the 100 or so

03: 40

03: I hope that I can do that. With these podcasts here. That would be amazing.

03: 47

03: I don't know the 100 just seems like the the target. There's a few things we're in the podcasting world.

03: 53

03: Getting 200 episodes means that you actually are quite attractive to

03: 59

03: sponsors and things like that. So that's, that is a reason one reason to do it. But you're also I really wanted to do like a reflective episode, I could do a reflective episode at any time, but it just feels like a milestone to go towards. And so that's why I have arbitrarily picked 100. But you know, I know people with episodes 250 or 300. Because if 350 Because I've been podcasting for seven or eight years on the one podcast and then stayed true to the one podcast. So that's a definitely a dream to be here for a long time. And one of my girlfriends reminded me of that and said, You know, I said I've got this list and I just want to record them all now and I want to share them all with you now. And she said there's time which was a lovely thing to remind me and it's a lovely thing to have. Now, ironically with podcasting today my voice isn't great.

05: 00

05: Do something really cool that I'm doing this week that might help me won't help my throat.

05: 06

05: That's just is what it is after going to Taylor Swift on Monday night, but

05: 12

05: I'm actually doing a speaking course on Friday a speaking course and workshop course this week and workshop on Friday with the fabulous Shelly Horton who was on my last episode because although I am a speaker, I know that I can improve. And I want to do more and more of it and grow that part of my business and personality. All of it. I love it so much. And I think it can help me to protect my voice, but also to use my voice even more and in better ways. So I'm doing that. And yeah, you can listen to that episode number 41. And we're running that workshop together, which will be fabulous. What I'm co hosting, supporting, so I'm doing the training. And then I'm supporting Shelly, with

06: 03

06: the actual day is going to be there to be there for some of the group and just to be there as encouraging support to help it all run smoothly. I love doing that. So that's that. But today, we're talking about podcasting. So why podcasting, how I got into it, and how I do it. And if you want to hear more about this, or you'd like to be starting a podcast, I'd love to support you. Because there are courses out there, there are definitely things that can help you. But sometimes that's overwhelming. And you just want to talk to somebody and you just want to ask how did you do it? Or what do I do next. And you can start a podcast in the simplest way. Honestly, full disclosure, I am in my dad's house, I am sitting in bed.

06: 46

06: Because I've left it to the last minute, as usual.

06: 50

06: I've had this list here, but I seem to struggle with recording my own, I might even I'm looking at in the future, getting a studio to batch record solo episodes, because I think that will help me. But for now I am recording this in the simplest way I'm holding up my phone, I've got voice memo on, it might not be the best audio. But I hope if you listen for a few minutes, you'll tune that out.

07: 21

07: I don't want to be fixed. But I would love to get used to have a proper mic at home. And then it I didn't even always sound it was good. But it wasn't phenomenal. And then we were always moving around on my desk and I think the the cord ended up breaking and I no longer

07: 41

07: have that. And so I haven't really invested I'm looking at sort of a also looking at a lapel sort of the new hand held rode mics, because I travel a lot. And I'm currently in Sydney in my dad's house. So all well and good to have this amazing setup at home, I'd be very, I would then be in a way it would be good to sit there and, and to batch and to record in my home. But I love being able to also record as I go. And so maybe just getting a bit of a better mic that I can use

08: 13

08: here would be helpful to us as I travel because yeah, I recorded my last one again, because I'm so last minute. But I recorded my last one in India, in the hotel room when I got a moment of peace. So myself and I said, Okay, I've just got to record this before we get off for the day. And I sat again on the bed in the hotel room, and I recorded and it was fine. And so

08: 38

08: you know, just removing the barriers to entry. So if you're wanting to get started, remove the barriers to entry find that the simplest way to start. And if you need support with that, I can do that in my hour of power coaching. But I'm also putting together something that I will share at the end of this episode.

08: 59

08: That could be really great for you as well. So let's jump in. How did it start? So the first, my first podcast lovely travels started as a joke.

09: 11

09: Not as a joke, but as a haha, we could do that. I was in, I made myself a mission in 2019, which, you know, seeing as what happened with the world shutting down in 2020 was not ideal timing. But I set myself a mission 2019 After hearing about a woman in who was going to be the first black woman to visit every country in the world. And she had reached out to my guide in Mongolia. And he was asking me about it when I was there about what like hosting her and how he would respond and that sort of thing. And so I looked into her and I'd heard about these people before and I went and looked at more of these people who traveled the world and been to every country and I loved the idea of it but I'd never really set it as a target. And then I kind of got tunnel vision and focused on

10: 00

10: on it. And I spent the entire plane ride back from Mongolia to China, mapping out or making sure I've written down all the countries I've visited,

10: 11

10: had already worked out and then worked out what are the UN countries because that's important. So there are about 240 countries in the world. But there's 195, un recognized 193, and then two special territories. So I needed to work out how many countries of those I had visited.

10: 32

10: Because I've visited quite a few that weren't un recognized, you know, like Scotland because Scotland is part of the United Kingdom. So you count the United Kingdom, not Scotland and Wales and Northern Ireland.

10: 43

10: Anywho. That's very specifics, and we can do an episode on that another day. So anyway, I got really fixated on it. And I had this vision to do that. And so then, in November 2019, I set I just was like, I want to go to Europe. I want to see as many countries in a few days as I can. And so me and my friend Darius went on a road trip from Poland, to Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. And we were in I flew from Germany into Poland, we drove to Lithuania. So we were in three countries in one day. And the next day, we were in Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia. And so I was in five countries in two days. And I was like, This is so possible in Europe, especially, it's so possible. Some of the other places is going to be harder to get to islands in the Pacific. There are countries that are limited, but I just wanted to prove I could do it. And it was hectic. But it was fun. And we did a road trip. And while we're on the road trip, we both liked podcasts. And so we're listening to podcasts. And as we were chatting along and being silly in the car, we thought we're hilarious. We are so fun. We should do a podcast. And that was it. The seed was planted. And that was November. And then we sort of talked about it a little bit here and there. And then in early March 2020, the world shut down. We were at home with a lot of time everybody was at home with a lot of time. I went into the I went into freeze at first and then I went into some action. And then I went into just filling my days with stuff. And so having this purpose and this thing to do. We set about maybe we could do this podcast. So Darius did the editing. I did the management of the episodes and set up a calendar and did the planning. And we just started recording and we got it hosted on prodigy. And we just did it. And yeah, Doris got some amazing new skill set of editing. We found music for the audio, which I still love. It's now the music for this show. And that was it. We started and it was such a great learning experience and great to do it together. But yeah, then in 2021, I got to a point I'd had I had my baby. So we did a great job of batching. To cover that time, it was getting a little bit more challenging. Darius ended up having a child too. So they're four months apart. And with the time difference, and children and work, it was getting a little bit more challenging to do, but also realize that podcasting was such a great medium, and I really needed to be doing with the business focus. I love the travel, I would love to get that sponsored. There was so many ideas for it. And obviously, with the mission to visit every event recognized country, the idea was meant to be that I was going to travel record as I went have episodes that were on the road. I was also having there was an element of I wanted to talk about mental health. And so it was going to be visiting countries talking to people about mental health and how they manage it. They're sort of a really big project and that's that's not going away. That'll definitely come back and it's such a Yeah, kind of viewing how mental health is viewed all around the world and how people manage it and live with it. It's something I'm really passionate about and obviously here I'm passionate about self care. So

14: 09

14: yeah, but I kind of went I've got to do this for business as well. So I started a second podcast delivering love your brand podcast, which I decided to launch at the same time. I started back work with after having my son in May 2021. I decided in August September to launch a course and a podcast at the same time. Do not recommend don't do it. I had a fabulous VA at the time the poor thing I don't know how she managed but we did. And we got it out there. And I just love the podcasting so I always seem to put it first.

14: 45

14: Which I've now made a really big priority in my business because I really love it and I think it's such a powerful medium. And I do love speaking so it makes sense. A lot of content comes for the podcast as well. So it is important piece of our weekly content. And we have

15: 00

15: or much content now that we do video with the podcast to

15: 04

15: let alone all the words that are said on this. So there's lots of wonderful points that people raise as my guests, lots of wonderful points that I raise that we could be sharing. And so

15: 17

15: yes, there's lots to be done with a podcast.

15: 21

15: Emma's innate ability to lift others, her unwavering authenticity, her dedication to following her passions are only qualities that radiate from every single part of all her endeavors.

15: 38

15: Whatever she touches and creates is just magical. In a world where everything is trying to mold us, and we're really stem strong, showing us that staying true to ourselves is the ultimate path to success. She is just this amazing Trailblazer. Just become a dear friend and an amazing mentor.

16: 06

16: Anywho so I ran that up to 81 episodes, I believe. But I then shifted my focus. So change again. So that was 2023, I was doing weekly episodes.

16: 21

16: I ended up sort of retiring, or putting on hold, we've never officially retired lovely travels, because we were doing them both at the same time for a while, then I was just focusing on the business one, because that would actually bring me income. And it did. Clients 100% signed up, because they heard a podcast episode to work with me as a private coach, or join me on retreats or do some of my programs, which is phenomenal.

16: 46

16: But then I realized,

16: 49

16: yeah, I wasn't going to be focusing on personal brand anymore.

16: 53

16: That was too narrow for me. And that I'm I realized I could bring the travel into the work into my work and that I wanted to work as Emma Lovell as well. And so that's when the Emma Lovell show. And I even was going to just change the the love your brand to the Emma Lovell show. And I really hesitated and held off for a number of weeks. And then when it just clicked one day that no it required its own podcast, it needed its own vibe, it needed a clean slate. And here we are today, 42 episodes later. So

17: 23

17: the thing is, once you've done it, and it sounds a lot to have three podcasts, but once you've done it and you've got the format and you've got the formula, the podcasting is just a process. And to be honest, this is the easiest part talking to you is the easiest part for me.

17: 41

17: So I'm just want to give you a little insight into the how now. And I think one of my greatest assets and one of the greatest things I've created, in my humble opinion is my podcast, editorial calendar. I use air table, which is an amazing system. I call it Excel on crack. It's like a spreadsheet on crack. It's beautiful. It's colorful, it filters things. It's fun to use, so actually use it. But the podcast is one I play hanging out in the most. And I've got tabs for my episode, I've got a spreadsheet, if you will, for my episode for my guests, for the information for the tasks about the podcast, for me as a guest. So that's a really important part of the podcast is to grow the podcast is me being a guest and, and getting out there and promoting cross promoting sponsorships, which we haven't tapped yet. But if you are a spot listening, and you would like to sponsor this podcast, please contact me I'd love to have a conversation. That is definitely something that we've got. I've now got a

18: 40

18: and we had a tab about the rebrand and what we went through for that, which wasn't a rebrand. In the end. It was just a new podcast. And then I finally got a tab about world domination,

18: 50

18: which is actually my mission to have this podcast listened to in as many countries as possible. I think we're up to around 25 Different countries where people listen. So if you're listening, and you know someone in a different country, please share it with them. I would love to have listeners from all over the world, which is something really fun. I got really random ones like Russia, in some islands and things like that, that I'm like, okay, cool.

19: 17

19: Anyway, I have to hit to the airport soon. So I've got to wrap this up. I'm being very transparent about how I'm running this show. But yeah, the podcast calendar lists. In the episode, the planning, we have our description, the number, the guest, the host, the host is generally me, the most important factor of this is the stage and because I work with an editor, we a podcast editor and a VA who supports me with all the assets of the podcast. What stage to podcast is up to so whether it's recorded or if it's scheduled to record, whether it's edited or approved, whether it's published on the platform, or scheduled loaded into the

20: 00

20: platform, we need to know where it's up to so that we can keep our work going on any given day. We have the planned recording date, the release date, the promo title, the episode, title, subtitle, description, the transcription link, the show notes, which are very important, the tags. And then we have some checklists that we have as well. We also include now a testimonial. So we have to track which testimonials, or promos that we use in the middle of the episode, which I'm sure you have heard if you listen regularly. So all of that is planned out. And I generally plan I've got planned up till April at the moment, up to about episode 60. Rough planned. And I've got recorded up to about guests, I've got recorded up to end of March.

20: 52

20: But

20: 55

20: you know, it's the solo episodes I seem to get stuck on. And so

21: 00

21: that's how I do that. But how did I get started? I think that's where people really ask. So I've told you I started with Darius, we, you know, he learned about editing, I found out about Potjie to host you need a hosting platform. And we really just did that ourselves.

21: 16

21: He bought me a mic, which was a lovely gift. But I could just record on Zoom, we recorded on Zoom. So either I record on Zoom, or I record on voice memo, I have tried different platforms. I don't think the the quality goes up dramatically. I think going into a studio would but it hasn't really affected my listenership. So me going investing in 300 other microphones, or spending days in studios

21: 42

21: are what the important thing is getting episodes out there. And I would love to improve the quality, I would love to have a structure around my solo episodes, as I say and booking in that studio. But right now, this is working. And I hope you agree it's working. And you just need to start some of my podcast episodes on my last podcast and it will be on these two were recorded on lives on Instagram, and I downloaded the audio and it was great interview. So I use that, you know, it's finding this the easiest way that the path of least resistance to start. This one though I wanted it to be different. And I actually invested in an incredible woman. She is a Podcast Producer, she can actually edit and do all the things. But I've got her for the strategic side of things. And for that initial setup. Her name is Leah Stonestreet, and she is the founder of snappy, straight creative, and I highly recommend her to do at least a startup package. That was a great thing. So you don't need a producer the whole time. You don't need to pay an editor necessarily. But one of my top tips is to have it edited and my VA is able to edit it. You can find people who can edit Darius learn to edit, which was great. I do not recommend editing yourself. Because some people get very, very, they spent three hours editing the episode because they too attached to it. I record send it off, comes back. I also don't remove ends if spots blur because that's how I talk and I want to make sure that if you meet me in person, I sound like I sound on the podcast. If you hear me speak on stage, I sound like I sound. So I want to keep that consistent.

23: 24

23: I then, you know worked with her. She did, I think to get those initial assets. So my acknowledgement of country. My intro my outro is some promos to get the style of the podcast and to get those core pieces done in a professional way, was a really great thing to have. And now that we have those assets, they're just like pieces like that you put together. The editors job is much simpler. He's really just taking my voice from this recording. And then putting the pieces together. He's great at what he does. But it's a lot simpler because we have quality pieces to work with. In saying that there are podcasts who don't have pre recorded audio intros or outros. They literally just start talking, tell you what the episode is about. It's just them recorded. That's it. You could do it as simply as record yourself on a voice memo. Upload the audio, their mp3 file, topology that to your episode. You can make it as simple or as complex. I want this to be professional. As I said, I'm looking for sponsors. I also have clients who sometimes pay me upwards of $5,000 to work with me on a retreat or in my VIP days or in my coaching. I want this to be professional and I want it to be of quality so I'm improving that time and time again.

24: 42

24: The other thing as I said the top tip would be having somebody to edit so having the VA honestly I do about 20 to 30% of the work here. I do getting the guests I do organizing my calendar. I do the recording when I get around to it

24: 59

24: which

25: 00

25: is probably the bit that drags. And then he does so many of the pieces because we've I've built the system, he edits it, he puts together the promotional tiles for me, he puts together the show notes for me based on the information, I have a form that my guests fill out. He does the transcription, which we use otter, and giving away all my secrets here. But honestly, I don't do it alone. And I don't think you should do it alone. It doesn't have to cost a lot. But with a system and a process and support in place, you can have a really high quality product, a really high quality, quality offering of a podcast that doesn't take all the time in the world. As I said, I'm doubling down tripling down taxing this podcast, and I'm dedicating more and more time to it. And it will be getting an entire day in my week that is focused on that are focused on interviews focused on planning, focused on securing sponsorship focused on

25: 57

25: Yeah, just it just finding the topics and things that you want to hear. So

26: 03

26: as well as doing my own prospecting for getting onto podcast. That's, as I said, just as important. And it's how the podcast grows, is that mutual sharing and cross promoting? Now I have to go and get a plane, so I'm gonna have to leave you but what I talked about it in early on in this episode is that I get asked about this so often. And so I want to help. And so what I'm putting together is a masterclass, it will be released very soon is going to be

26: 32

26: a zoom. masterclass, it's going to be about 90 minutes max. I'm going to do a live training

26: 41

26: that where you can I will talk take you through my podcast calendar, take you through the steps that I started, introduce you give you my contacts and the people that I use to help me with my podcasts and the people who've helped me over the time. So that if you are someone who wants to start a podcast, you can just start, you can just start, because that's the important thing is just starting, and it can get better. And if you're like me, I hope that this won't be my last podcast, I'm now looking at collaborating and CO hosting podcasts. I'm looking talking with someone about potentially getting paid to host their podcast. Like I hope to have five or 10 podcasts. But the Emma Lovell show is my baby, it is my signature, it will be the one that gets to the 300 400 500 episodes, and will be here long into the future. And so I've got I want you to be able to have this opportunity because it is a great medium. And I want you to get past the average of seven episodes. So as I said, I have 200 episodes across three podcasts, I can absolutely share with you and help you. And if you don't want to wait for the training, there is my hour of power. And just for you, if you've listened all the way and you want my hour of power, I'll offer you 25% off. So if you reach out to me and email me, Emma at Emma lovell.au You want to work on your podcast, email me with podcast 25 off, I will send you a link to book in my area of power and you'll have 25% off that call. Okay. I hope you've enjoyed this podcast about podcasting. As always, it was longer than I expected. But there's so much to tell you. And I will share more and more and more about this because I think it's a fantastic thing. So thank you for being here. Thank you for listening without you. This doesn't exist.
